Ellipsograph – Leonardo da Vinci’s Ellipse Puzzle
We had to wait until Johannes Kepler formulated his laws in the early 1600s to truly understand the elliptical motion of the planets. Yet it seems Leonardo da Vinci had already foreseen this centuries earlier. Among his many remarkable inventions was an instrument known as the ellipsograph — a device capable of drawing perfect ellipses.
CHALLENGE: Disassemble and reassemble the ellipse, which consists of 12 precisely fitted pieces.
